How to form it
| Person | Ending | hablar | comer | vivir |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -ía | hablaría | comería | viviría |
| tú | -ías | hablarías | comerías | vivirías |
| él/ella/usted | -ía | hablaría | comería | viviría |

Keys to remember
- Formula: infinitive + -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían. Same endings for all verbs.
- Same irregular stems as the future: tendr-, pondr-, saldr-, vendr-, podr-, querr-, sabr-, habr-, har-, dir-.
- Don’t confuse it with the imperfect: comía (I used to eat) vs. comería (I would eat).
- “If I had…, I would…” needs the imperfect subjunctive in the if-part. See the imperfect subjunctive lesson.

On my ideal trip, I would go first to Mexico City. I would visit the museums and eat tacos al pastor on every corner. Then I would travel to Cusco and hike to Machu Picchu. I would like to finish in Buenos Aires, where I would learn to dance tango. My best friend would come with me, because he’s the funniest person I know. And I’d tell you one thing: if I were you, I wouldn’t wait any longer to travel.
